Description Curly Maple & American Walnut Chessboard. Featured here s a Signature Contemporary Curly Maple & American Walnut Chessboard featuring a unique raised playing field design with 2-1/2″ squares and an Ebony delimiter. The frame and back are solid American Walnut. The chessboard measures 24″ square. The design utilizes a “floating” playing field to prevent loading of the miters as the woods expand and contract with ambient temperature and moisture. Accompanying this chessboard is a luxurious soft black leather, padded carrying case. The Curly Maple & American Walnut Chessboard is signed and dated. It was designed and crafted by Ken Woodhead in December 2018. Curly Maple is not technically a distinct species of Maple, but rather, it’s a figure that’s occasionally found in Acer saccharum (Sugar Maple) trees. It’s named “Curly” because the figure gives the illusion of 3-dimensional waves. The figure is reportedly caused by unfavorable growing conditions for the tree. American Walnut is found in the Eastern United States. More information on American Walnut can be found at http://www.wood-database.com/black-walnut/
