Lot #798. Antique Folding Chess and Backgammon Board/Box

Description Antique Folding Chessboard and Backgammon Box. An Antique Folding Chessboard and Backgammon Box with inlaid embellishments. One side of the board/box has the standard 64 squares for Chess and Draughts. The obverse has inlaid points for Backgammon.  The chessboard squares and Backgammon Points are Sycamore and Rosewood veneer with inlaid delimiters in a solid, dark-stained Mahogany frame. The chess board measures 21-1/2″ by 18-1/2″ over-all. The square size is 2.2″. This folding box was designed to house a set of full tournament-size chess pieces and 1-7/16″ diameter Backgammon checkers with shakers and die (not included). Based on the direction of the fold in the chessboard, the board/box pre-dates the establishment of standardized rules for chess. This Chess and Backgammon Board/Box is good condition for its age. The finish is quite good This board/box dates to around 1880 – 1900.
