Lot #935. Antique Folding Chess Board Box

Description Antique Folding Chess Board Box. An Antique Folding Chess Board Box. One side of the board/box has the standard 64 squares for Chess and Draughts. The box opens to serve as a storage box for the chess or checker pieces.  The chessboard squares are Sycamore and Mahogany veneer with a solid Mahogany frame. The chess board measures14-1/2″ by 13″. The square size is 1.4″. This chessboard was designed to display a set of chess pieces with a 1-1/4″ base diameter base. Based on the direction of the fold in the chessboard, the board/box probably dates to the establishment of standardized rules for chess. This Chess Board/Box is good condition for its age, with a few splits in the veneer squares visible. The finish is quite good This board/box dates to around 1890.
